What to Do When Faced with a Tough Decision

1. Ask yourself what will make you feel proud. I remember a call I had many years ago from a young man in his 20s whose sister had died, and he was wondering whether or not to raise her kids. I told him to pretend as if he had been whooshed to the future by the Ghost of Christmas Past and was looking at himself right now. Which decision would make him feel proud? After that, it was a no-brainer. He didn’t have to make a pros and cons list or have an internal debate. He knew what he needed to do.

2. Reflect on past decisions you’ve made. You’ve made a lot of decisions in your life - some really stupid and some really smart.  Reflect on them. How did they turn out? What criteria did you use?

3. Listen to your instincts. Instincts are different from your emotions. Instincts are more based on information and what you know deep down to be true.

4. Be willing and ready to deal with the fallout.
