Men Need to be Men
Dear Dr. Laura:
I was leaving a store yesterday, and happened to reach the door at the same time as a man. I didn't know him, and he was about my age (50ish), dressed very casually in shorts and a T-shirt.
As I got to the door, he reached in front of me awkwardly to push the door open so I could go through first. I paused, exited the store and turned to say thank you. His response nearly floored me. He said "Women don't let me be a gentleman anymore. They usually open their own doors." This deeply affected me, and I immediately thought of you.
All this man wanted to do was be a gentleman, and in his experience, many women didn't allow him to express such a simple kindness. His comment touched my heart and reminded me that men need to be men, and as women, we NEED to let them be men.
