Email of the Day: How to Encourage Your Teen to Get a Summer Job

Over the past few weeks, I've heard several calls where you've recommended Krav Maga to parents of teenage boys. Then yesterday, I listened to a caller asking for advice on how to "encourage" her 15-year-old son to get a summer job. I'd like to share our experience with our son the summer he turned 16.

At that time, my husband and I didn't like the direction he was headed. He struggled to fit in with his new high school peers, and his grades dropped significantly. He seemed depressed and started to hide behind screens more and more. By the end of that school year, we had had enough. I didn't know what to do, but my man did.

He took away ALL electronic devices and hid them in the attic. He sent our boy to work in the ice cream parlor we owned. He enrolled him in a beginner's class for teens at our local Krav Maga studio. I fully trusted and supported my husband at every step, and it turned out to be the BEST solution for our son. That summer saved him. He is now an independent adult, living in his own apartment and working hard at a career that he enjoys. We couldn't be prouder.
