Email of the Day: I've Sworn Off the Role of Victim

Email of the Day: I've Sworn Off the Role of Victim

I’m the caller who inspired your blog titled "When Suffering Becomes Your Identity." I might’ve been on the phone with you for less than five minutes, but that was the most instrumental five minutes of my life. I was speechless at the realization that I was living life as a victim. I couldn't find the words during our call, but I was disgusted with myself at the thought.

Later that evening, when my husband arrived home, I gave him a recap of our call and promised him, "That crap stops today!" The role of a victim is not one I am interested in playing. I have already used our conversation several times as a reminder that I am not a victim and need to act accordingly.

My spouse and I have even turned it into an inside joke. When we catch the other throwing a pity party, we jokingly ask, "Are you being a victim?" That question is enough to get a chuckle and switch our perspectives in the moment.

I've kept true to my promise since our call. I am determined to be a better wife, be the woman my husband deserves, and stop weighing him down with childish emotions. Thank you for your no-nonsense approach and for delivering the loving kick in the pants I needed.
