Email of the Day: My Daughter Thanked Me for Staying at Home

Email of the Day: My Daughter Thanked Me for Staying at Home

I deeply appreciate how fiercely you advocate for children and encourage moms to stay home with their kids. On road trips, my husband and two daughters always ask to listen to your program because, as they say, β€œIt's not a road trip without some Dr. Laura!” I've often wondered what the girls pick up on when they listen to you...

Over the weekend, my husband and I decided that we'd tear out the backyard swing set. The decision itself was easy to make. The kids aren't using it anymore, and we want to repurpose the space. But ever since our decision, I’ve felt a lump in my throat whenever I look out the patio door at those swings. I was caught off guard by feeling such sadness over an inanimate object.

Earlier today, my 14-year-old glanced out to the backyard and said she was sad to see the swing set go. Of course, I agreed! But I proceeded to tell her about the first time that she learned how to pump her legs on the swing. I remember it so vividly, as if it happened yesterday. She shrieked with PURE joy as she swung higher, β€œMommy! Mommy! I did it! I can swing!"

As I relived that story with her, I laughed and cried. My daughter also started laughing and threw her arms around me in a big bear hug. Her laughter quickly turned to quiet tears as she squeezed me tight and whispered, β€œMom, thank you for NEVER putting me in daycare.” Keep fighting the good fight, Dr. Laura. I am forever grateful
