Dr. Laura:
I recently read an article that said for the first time in modern history, living with one's parents now edges out other living arrangements for 18-34 year olds. I'm PROUD I moved out at age 18, almost 400 miles away from my home town. College was not for me, but I was highly motivated to get a job, and I had one within a week.
I lived with roommates from age 18 to 22. It was difficult at times, but I supported myself 100%. I had my own health insurance (through work), unlike most others my age that were sucking off their parents' insurance until the cutoff age. At 22, I finally was able to get a studio apartment on my own, enjoying the freedom and accomplishment that I knew I achieved myself.
I'm glad I was raised by parents who prepared me for adulthood and did not force me into college. I love my independence and credit my maturity to that, even though I'm only 24 years old. I hope more young people will get out on their own to feel what it's like to support themselves.
