Learning I'd Be a Parent - A Dad's Story
07/23/2012

I was at sea on a Navy destroyer in the Caribbean and we had just been ordered to return home to Florida because of the approach of a hurricane. I was informed I had a phone call and the Captain was not happy I was getting called at sea (we had one phone for 350 men @ $10/minute and only a few people were suppose to have the number.) I knew something important had to have happened for my wife to be calling (she had to call my Captain's wife to get the ship's phone number). When I answered the phone, she said, "Hi Dad," as she started to relay to me the information about our son that the adoption agency had given her.

It took us two days to get home, but my wife was waiting on the pier and we left immediately to fly to Colorado where our son was born and meet him for the first time. That was 16 years ago, and being a dad is one of the best things that has ever happened to me!
